Every colorist eventually hits the same wall: a folder with hundreds of LUTs, cryptic names, duplicates, and no idea which one to grab. A messy library quietly slows down every edit. Here's a simple system for taming it, and how CreativePass helps you keep it clean on mobile.
Why organization matters more than you think
Your LUT library is a creative toolkit. If you can't find the right look in seconds, you either waste time scrolling or default to the same three LUTs forever. Good organization makes your whole collection usable, encourages consistency across a project, and turns "where's that look?" into a one-tap answer.
Separate technical from creative
The first and most important split: keep conversion LUTs (log-to-Rec.709 transforms like Sony, Canon, Arri, RED) completely separate from creative look LUTs. They do different jobs and live at different stages of your pipeline. Mixing them is the number-one cause of confusion.
Group creative looks by intent
Within your creative LUTs, fold them into a handful of clear buckets you'll actually remember, for example: Warm/Golden, Cool/Teal, Film Emulation, Black & White, Vintage/Faded, and High Contrast. Resist the urge to make 40 micro-categories; six to ten buckets keeps browsing fast.
Name files so you can read them
Rename cryptic files into a consistent pattern like Category_Look_Strength, for instance Teal_Cinematic_Strong or Film_Portra_Subtle. Future you will be grateful. Delete obvious duplicates and anything broken while you're in there.
Curate ruthlessly
You don't need 500 LUTs; you need 30 you trust. Mark a small set of go-to favorites and hide the rest so your everyday view stays focused. You can always unhide a pack when a specific project calls for it.
Managing it all in CreativePass
CreativePass is built for this. You can import your own .cube packs, sort them into folders, mark favorites, and hide or show packs depending on the job, with cloud sync so your organization follows you across devices. Live previews mean you confirm a look at a glance instead of guessing from a filename, and the built-in LUT store packs are organized the same way, so your imports and downloads live side by side.
A 20-minute cleanup plan
Split technical from creative, bucket your creative looks into six to ten groups, rename the keepers, delete duplicates, and star your favorites. Do it once and every edit afterward gets faster.
