Lunar Studio Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 23, 2026
Lunar Studio is a macOS video editing application published by Moon Bear LLC. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. The short version: Lunar Studio does not track you, runs no analytics, and operates no server that receives your work. Your projects, media, and edits stay on your Mac.
1. Who we are
Lunar Studio (“the app,” “we,” “us”) is developed and published by Moon Bear LLC. You can reach us at hello@moonbear.shop.
2. What we collect
We collect nothing. Lunar Studio has no developer analytics, no telemetry, no advertising identifiers, and no tracking. Our privacy manifest declares no tracking, no tracking domains, and no collected data types.
Your projects, video and audio files, color grades, captions, and all editing data are stored locally on your Mac, in the files and folders you choose. We never receive them.
3. AI features (bring your own key)
Lunar Studio’s assistant runs privately on your Mac by default — no account, no API key, and it works offline. Beyond that default, AI works in two ways, and neither sends your data to us:
- On-device understanding. Features built on Apple’s Vision, Natural Language, and Speech frameworks — scene and content analysis, text embedding, caption transcription — run entirely on your Mac and make no network calls. Transcription uses on-device recognition wherever macOS supports it.
- Optional cloud providers (your key, your account). If you connect a cloud provider, you supply your own API key. That key is stored only in your macOS Keychain, never in your project files, and requests go directly from your Mac to the provider you selected. They do not pass through any Moon Bear server.
The providers Lunar Studio can be connected to, and what each receives when you use it:
| Provider | Used for | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Assistant / chat | Your prompt and the project context you include |
| OpenAI | Assistant / chat, embeddings, image generation, transcription, speech | Your prompt; for transcription, the audio of the clip you transcribe; for speech, the text you synthesize |
| Assistant / chat | Your prompt and the project context you include | |
| Replicate | Generative media | The prompt you write for the media being generated |
A note on transcription and speech. Captions are generated on-device by default. If you have connected an OpenAI key and choose the higher-accuracy cloud option, the audio of the clip you are transcribing is uploaded to OpenAI for that request. Text-to-speech works the same way: the text you ask to be spoken is sent to OpenAI. Both are opt-in and per-request — nothing is sent in the background.
When you use any cloud provider, the prompt and any content you send are handled under that provider’s privacy policy and terms, not ours: Anthropic · OpenAI · Google · Replicate.
If you never configure a provider key, Lunar Studio makes no AI-related network requests at all.
4. Files and system APIs
Lunar Studio runs in the macOS App Sandbox and accesses only what you grant it:
- Files you choose. It reads and writes media and project files you open, import, or export. It uses security-scoped bookmarks so previously opened media can be relinked after you relaunch.
- File metadata. While importing and relinking, it reads file timestamps and sizes to detect moved or changed footage.
- Preferences. It reads and writes its own settings.
- Disk space. It checks available space for caching, proxies, and export.
- Speech recognition. With your permission, it transcribes timeline audio to generate captions, on-device where macOS supports it.
These are used solely to make the app function on your machine. None of it is transmitted to us.
5. Network use
Lunar Studio makes outbound network connections only when you initiate a feature that needs one — a request to a cloud AI provider whose key you configured, or opening a link (support, release notes, this policy) in your browser. There is no background communication with us, no automatic upload of your data, and no analytics beacons.
Checking for updates. The app can check whether a newer version exists — at most once a day in the background, and whenever you choose Help → Check for Updates. That check is an ordinary download of a small version file from our store: it carries no identifier, no account, and nothing about your projects, though (as with opening any web page) your Mac’s IP address is visible to the server that serves the file. In this build no version file is published yet, so the check makes no request at all.
Lunar Studio can also act as a local server, and it is off by default. The app includes an automation interface (MCP) so external tools and AI agents can drive the editor. It is controlled in Settings → Scripting and has three states:
- Off — the default. No socket is opened and no port is bound. If you never change this setting, the app never listens for anything.
-
Local only — the app listens on
127.0.0.1:27182, reachable only from your own Mac. No authentication is required, because nothing off your machine can connect. -
On (network) — the app listens on all interfaces
(
0.0.0.0:27182) and is reachable from other devices on your network. A bearer token is required; it is generated on your Mac and stored in your Keychain. Turn this on only on a network you trust.
In every case the server accepts editing commands and returns editing results. It does not send anything to Moon Bear.
6. Camera and microphone
Lunar Studio imports existing media files. It does not open your camera or microphone, and it does not request those permissions.
7. Crash reports stay on your Mac
Lunar Studio uses Apple’s MetricKit to record diagnostics if the app crashes or hangs. Those reports are written to a file on your Mac.
Today, nothing is sent — there is no upload destination at all. The app asks for your consent before a report could ever be sent, and that consent gate is deliberately in place ahead of any endpoint. You can read the exact file that would be sent before you decide, and change your mind later in Settings. If you decline, or never answer, the reports simply stay on your Mac.
If we ever do enable sending, what leaves would be Apple’s own diagnostic payload: where the app crashed (call stacks), the exception code, and your macOS and Lunar Studio versions. It would contain none of your projects, media, filenames, API keys, or anything you typed, and the one metadata field that could identify your machine is stripped first.
Separately, macOS may offer to share crash reports with Apple — that is a system setting under Privacy & Security → Analytics, and it is between you and Apple, not us.
8. Feedback you choose to send
If you use the in-app feedback form, your message is saved to a log file on your own Mac and composed into a pre-filled email that opens in your mail client. Nothing is transmitted until you press send in your own mail app, and what you send arrives as an ordinary email to us. The message includes the app version, build, macOS version, and locale to help us reproduce the issue — you can see and edit all of it before sending, and you decide whether to include your email address.
9. Buying Lunar Studio
Purchases are handled by this store, moonbear.shop, which runs on Shopify. When you buy, Shopify and our payment processor collect the information needed to complete the order — name, email, billing details, and payment information — under this store’s own privacy policy and Shopify’s. Moon Bear LLC never sees or stores your full payment card details. Store purchase data is separate from the app: buying Lunar Studio does not connect your order to anything you do inside the editor.
10. Children’s privacy
Lunar Studio is a professional creative tool not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13.
11. Data security
Because your content stays on your device, its security is governed by your Mac’s protections (FileVault, your account password, Keychain). API keys you enter are stored in the macOS Keychain rather than in plain text within the app or in your project files.
12. Your rights
Because we do not collect personal information through the app, there is generally nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf. For anything tied to a store purchase, contact us at hello@moonbear.shop and we will help with requests under laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA. We do not sell or share personal information.
13. Changes to this policy
If we add anything that changes this picture — analytics, crash-report uploading, a server-side component such as license activation, or new data handling — we will update this policy and the app’s privacy manifest before that feature ships, and revise the “Last updated” date above.
